What this is built on — and what it is not

Harmonia is an independent practice app. It is inspired by published research on heart-rhythm coherence, Earth’s magnetic environment, and collective-attention experiments. It is not a HeartMath product, and it does not have access to HeartMath or Global Consciousness Project API keys — because those organizations do not offer public ones.

HeartMath Institute, founded in 1991, has published extensively on heart rate variability (HRV) and a state they call heart coherence: a sine-like heart-rhythm pattern with a spectral peak near 0.1 Hz, typically produced by slow breathing around six breaths a minute plus a genuine positive emotion. In that state, the heart’s afferent signals to the brain become more ordered. This is measurable physiology, replicated in clinics and labs, and it is the basis of Harmonia’s personal score.

Harmonia estimates coherence from RR intervals the same way the literature does: a peak in the 0.04–0.26 Hz band, especially near 0.1 Hz, relative to the rest of that band. A Polar H10 (or any Bluetooth Heart Rate Service strap) is the preferred sensor. Camera PPG is a convenience path. A training signal is provided so the rhythm can be learned without hardware.

The global field

In 2008 HeartMath launched the Global Coherence Initiative. The hypothesis: human emotions encode in the heart’s electromagnetic field, couple into Earth’s magnetic environment (including Schumann resonances), and can, in the aggregate, influence a shared field. GCI operates magnetometers, participates in tree-rhythm research, and collaborates with the Global Consciousness Project 2.0 — a worldwide network of hardware random number generators that sometimes deviate from chance during events of mass attention.

GCP 2.0’s live map lives at gcp2.net. There is no documented public REST key for third-party apps. HeartMath’s Inner Balance and Global Coherence apps are closed. So Harmonia reads what is actually public: NOAA’s planetary K-index (geomagnetic weather), the Tomsk SOS-70 Schumann resonance (Earth’s ELF cavity), and the sittings of this community. If HeartMath or GCP open a developer feed, the field ledger is designed to accept it.

Schumann resonance

The Earth and the ionosphere form a spherical cavity. Global lightning continuously excites it, producing standing waves called Schumann resonances. The fundamental (SR1) sits near 7.83 Hz, with harmonics around 14, 20, 26 and 33 Hz. NASA and geophysics labs treat this as weather of the electric atmosphere — not a therapy, and not a mood ring.

HeartMath’s Global Coherence Monitoring System is a private network of magnetometers that records these same ELF bands, along with slower geomagnetic pulsations. There is no public GCMS API. Harmonia therefore uses the public spectrogram from Tomsk State University’s Space Observing System 70, a research station that has monitored Schumann resonances for decades. The live number in this app is SR1 peak frequency plus a relative 0–100 intensity from that spectrogram — not a calibrated picotesla reading, and not a global average of every station on Earth.

Two different clocks are easy to mix up. Heart-rhythm coherence is a slow 0.1 Hz pattern (about six breaths a minute). Schumann SR1 is about 7.83 Hz. Alpha brain rhythms sit near that faster band. HeartMath’s published work is strongest on the first direction: human HRV and the nervous system appear to vary with geomagnetic activity and Schumann power. The reverse — that a sitting, or even a large coherent group, changes 7.83 Hz itself — is a hypothesis, not an established mechanism. Lightning still dominates the cavity. Harmonia shows the pulse so you can sit with the planet. It does not score you on whether the planet moved.

The equation people remember

The formula most often cited for “a number of people who can shift a population” is not from HeartMath. It is the Maharishi Effect, proposed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and studied around Transcendental Meditation. First: 1% of a population practicing. Later: a group equal to the square root of 1% of a population, practicing the TM-Sidhi program together. For about 8.23 billion people that group size is roughly 9,070. HeartMath has cited related group-meditation studies (including crime-rate work with a few thousand people) as compatible evidence that coherent groups matter. It is contested science. Harmonia shows the numbers honestly, as a target this community can walk toward — not as a proven switch for world peace.

Sensors this app can actually use

  • Bluetooth Low Energy Heart Rate Service — Polar H10, and most gym straps. Best RR data.
  • Camera PPG — fingertip over the lens. Works in the browser, including iPhone Safari.
  • Training signal — a 0.1 Hz resonant heartbeat so the practice is usable with no hardware.
  • NOAA SWPC planetary K-index — live geomagnetic field, no key required.
  • Tomsk SOS-70 Schumann SR1 — live Earth–ionosphere cavity, public spectrogram, no key required.

HeartMath Inner Balance / Coherence Plus sensors use a proprietary Bluetooth protocol and will not appear here. That is by their design, not a missing key on our side.

Incentives

Lumens are earned from sitting, streaks, and coherent minutes. They redeem for titles, atmospheres, and longer practices. Paying people or issuing gift cards would require a funded partner (for example Tremendous or a similar rewards API) and a clear legal frame. Harmonia keeps a real ledger so that layer can be added without changing the practice.
